When You are Down, Look Up: The Antedote for Depression and Anxiety

When you are down, do not down the pills. Although millions of people find solace in them, they can only make things worst in the long run.

Let me share with you the secret of overcoming depression and anxieties.

King David sought and looked in the right direction; he looked to the One who is the “shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” (This is recorded in Psalm 3 and Psalm 121 in the Bible). He would often sing to Him whenever he was down, for there he knew he would find help. And help and comfort, he did find.

Don’t look down when you are depressed. Look up. Focus on the Person who is the source of true and lasting joy. Some think that this Person is a powerful force and stop at that. But allow me to say here: He is no impersonal force out there who is not mindful of anyone on this small and fragile planet. If you feel no one ever cares, you will surely find that He is the only One who does. Regardless of how many planets, suns, moons and stars there are, He has not forgotten mankind. He is always there for you. He never disappoints anyone.

Cast all your cares or anxieties on the One who always cares for you, on the One who thinks of you unceasingly. (Read Psalm 8:3,4 and 16:6-11).

As a matter of fact, reading and singing the book of Psalms is a good ante-dote for depression and anxieties. Yes, use the Psalms to sing to the Almighty for He will be near. Numerous songs have sprung up from this inspirational book over the years. Get to know and sing some of them and see, and feel the difference for yourself. Try them. It wouldn’t hurt trying, would it?

You will experience, as I have, uplifting of your spirit. You will discover inspirations for your soul. Keep reading and singing and rejoicing. There will emerge a new song in your heart.

Besides the spiritual side, one is especially susceptible to depressing moments when one is tired and drained, when one neglects one’s body, and so on.

Nutrition and other factors do play an important part. Develop good healthy habits. Eat right. Drink plenty of pure fluids. Get adequate rest and sleep. And don’t forget: Exercise does help too. These are just some of the tips that I trust will be helpful for you.

Cheer up, friends.
